Ok, I feel better now.

Let's just say I've been waiting for a long, long time (in a galaxy far, far away) for this movie and it was AWESOME!!

The story opens with your typical good resistance fighters pitted against the evil overlords of the galaxy. In that sense, it was nothing new. (Also, note to self: do not call the resistance fighters the Resistance.) There was a new Sith lord to fight, another Death Star-like planet to blow up and lots of gunfights in space. In other words, I had a serious case of déjà vu.

And now onto the good stuff. I would like to give an enormous, huge, GIGANTIC shoutout to the diversity in this movie. There was an African American dude and a woman who were the main characters of this huge Blockbuster action movie. If you take a look at the past Star Wars (or most action/sci-fi/fantasy/anything) movies, you'll notice that white men tend to take centre stage and it was so amazing to see that change.

Finn and Rey were awesome!!! Finn was a stormtrooper who refuses to kill and Rey was scavenger who lives in the deserts of Jukka. Finn was funny and kind and sweet and brave while Rey was super smart and strong while not conforming to many stereotypes that are typically found in these kinds of movies. She wasn't invincible but she didn't need to be rescued all the time, either. (I cannot stress enough how amazing she was. It was like the writers finally figured out that women are people too!) They had a great relationship and just ASDFJKL!! Both characters were deep but there wasn't a backstory dump, either, and that balance is incredibly hard to pull off like they did.

The look and feel of the whole movie felt just like Star Wars should. There were old faces and new faces and I felt so warm and fuzzy re-meeting Hans, Leia, Luke, R2-D2 and C-3PO. The action sequences were great, the special effects cool, the villain AWESOME (I'm a huge fan of a good villain, and this guy was fantastic), BB-8 (!!!!!!) and the humour. The final lightsaber battle was just incredible, and I think it's the best duel I've seen so far. I couldn't stop smiling the entire time. If you're not a Star Wars fan, you might not like it. (Mom fell asleep several times. Needless to say, she's not a fan.) But if you are, this is a warm welcome home.

Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think? Did you think I fangirled enough in this review?

STAR WARS IS SAFE, MY JABBERWOCKIES!!!

  1. I just saw it for the second time tonight. Finn's going to take a while to grow on me, I think, but I like him. I love Rey. I think you hit it on the head when it comes to how they portrayed her. I think it was a good set-up for the next trilogy and I can't wait to see the next one. (And Kylo Ren...agh!!! So excited for this villain!)

    1. I KNOW, RIGHT!?!?! *sobs* I'm pretty thrilled with Finn, personally, but I think he'll get a lot better as the story progresses. I just love Kylo Ren. He will be an amazing villain.

I loved this movie. In case I didn't make that clear already.

I loved how it had some definite similarities to A New Hope, because I felt that really helped reground me in the world. I was worried that it was going to be too different and new and that it wouldn't feel like Star Wars, so I was really happy to see a few similar details/plotlines, and of course all the old characters. And I love what they did with Finn and Rey. Rey is basically my favorite character ever (okay, maybe not quite that extreme, but she's definitely on the top ten). And BB-8--I haven't liked a sidekick character so much since Manchee. I really liked the villain, but once he took his mask off, I just wasn't as scared of him anymore. And I get that that was definitely the point, but I still much preferred the enigma that was the mask.

    But seriously, it was perfect.

    1. THIS MOVIE WAS (NEAR) PERFECTION, I AGREE!!!!

Alright, I can see that perspective. While it was good that the plotlines were similar and helped it feel like Star Wars, I think it was *too* similar for me. And the old characters where just amazing. When Han Solo and Chewy walked into the Falcon and Han said "Chewy, we're home,"... I just can't even.

Rey was just amazing. THANK YOU JJ ABRAMS!!! And BB-8 was awesome, not only because he was a cool looking robot but because he had so much personality, despite not really talking.

I agree, Kylo Ren taking his mask off did kinda deflate the scary-factor, but I think it was really important that he did take his mask off. The audience had to see that he was a regular guy and that he wasn't a monster or deformed or battle scarred or something. That, in a way, makes him even more scary. It's kind of like that monster behind the mask can be anyone, including yourself. And of course, with him not being scarred it raises the question to why he wore the mask in the first place. Darth Vader wore it because he was scarred and needed it to live because of but we don't know about Kylo Ren yet. Jurrassic World had the same issue. They don't show the dinosaur until halfway through the movie becaue the unknown scares us, but eventually they have to show the dinosaur which automatically makes it less scary. *shrugs* I don't know, it's just my (long and rambling) thoughts.

    2. That's actually a really good point about Kylo Ren's unscarred face being scarier because it's like it could be anyone behind the mask, even us. *nods* And yeah, it's definitely difficult to maintain the fear factor but not leave your audience hanging for too long. I probably would have been pretty disappointed if they hadn't unmasked Kylo Ren at some point or another. I'm super curious to know what they're going to do with him in the next movie.

Yeah, when Han said "Chewy, we're home," I might have died from too much fangirling.

BB-8 has an amazing amount of personality for someone who doesn't talk. Oh my goodness, he's so adorable. :)

    3. Thank you. *bows* It is a very thin line that can be difficult to balance but I think SW managed to pull it off. Man, I sure hope he's going to be great. I have very high expectations.

And when BB-8 gave Finn the thumbs up? I almost died.
