Starting Sparks: French fries and revenge

I'm back for Starting Sparks with Emily and Ashley. This month's prompt is "his mind was filled with thoughts of French fries and revenge" which I actually already had a story planned for. (So yeah, that was cool.)

"Amélie!" I watched out of the corner of my eye as Zacharie stormed into the room, a cigarette still burning between his fingers and a glowing cell phone in his other hand. "Amélie, we have a problem."

"Bonjour to you too," I muttered, still engrossed in my book.

"I just got a text from Eric down the street, and he insulted my nose. I'm fighting him in half and hour, and I need you to be my sniper."

I glanced up from my book to see that he was a frothing, simmering mess of dark lines and sharp angles, all contained in an easy shrug. Retired assassins didn't have an easy time adjusting. "What, you don't think you can beat a thug by yourself?"

"Of course I can!" He waved both his phone and cigarette around for emphasis. "But if he brings buddies, then there's only so much I can do."

"I once watched you fight five different guys at once." It was a terrible fight, too. Zacharie had no formal training, and as a result it'd taken many broken arms and smashed ribs before he learned to keep his elbows in. I'd learned that when I was five.

"And I broke my arm and my nose for the trouble. I don't want to break my nose again, I like my nose! Look, it's a beautiful nose!"

I frowned. I didn't know he had broken his nose before. I stared at it, but couldn't find any evidence of a break. The doctor must have done a good job as it was indeed a beautiful nose. I made a mental note to myself to break his beautiful nose if he ever annoyed me. I sighed. "Fine, I'll be your sniper. But if that police show up then I'm leaving you."

"I'll meet your for fries after my revenge." Zacharie grinned and gave me a thumbs-up, then scurried out before I could get angry at him for smoking in the apartment.

Are you linking up with Starting Sparks? Does anyone else think fries go well with revenge?

  1. Aaaaah! I love this so much. It made me smile. The preposterousness of it! XD And yet it seems so plausible, because what else would retired assassins struggling to be normal do with their time when they get bored? Insult each others' noses and have a duel!

Is it me or was it set in France? Or are they French? Or one of them? I don't know. I'm just getting French vibes, but I know nothing of France outside of Phantom of the Opera so there's a huge chance I've no clue what I'm talking about! XD

"I made a mental note to myself to break his beautiful nose if he ever annoyed me." I loved that part!

Thanks for linking up! This was great. :D

    1. I know, right? You have to do something with your time, and it's pretty great when your roomate is an excellent sniper. Bonus, right?

Yep, it's set in France, not sure where yet. Not in Paris, probably. Both of them were born and raised in France. (Hence the different spellings of the names.) I dunno, I just wanted retired French assassins.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  2. I love this! FRANCE FRANCE FRANCE! So what's going on here? Retired assassin takes sassy bookworm apprentice? Are they unwilling partners in crime? What are they? (I'm shipping them, by the way. "Your nose is beautiful, I might break it" = THE KIND OF ROMANCE IN WHICH I'LL GET INVESTED).

Thank you for linking up with us <333

PS You said elsewhere you had like 50k planned for this. So, are you going to write the book? What's the plan? Also, thank you for Formulas :D

    1. YES YES YES! They're both retired assassins, trying to adjust to normal life somewhere in France (I'm not sure where yet). I'm thinking that the girl decides to retire, then Zacharie is paid to try to kill her and [insert epic battle]. The next day they both show up at the same apartment and he's like "hey, I like you. Let's be room mates. It's okay, I've retired since yesterday." Then their past catches up with them and they have to run for their lives... (duh duh duh!)

      Thank you for hosting!

Yes, it is a plan but I don't know when I'll get around to it because I'm sure I'm going to die before I can write all my beautiful ideas. THANK YOU FOR TAKING FORMULAS, I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!

  3. This was so much fun - I want to know what happens in the duel for the honor of a nose. :D My story was about an assassin this month, too - great minds must think alike!

    1. Ha, I'll let you know how it turns out :) I think it'd be fun for him to make a sexist comment or something and she's like, well, if that's how it's going to be... Then smashes his nose. That's awesome! Assassins are so cool. (Well, unless you're being hunted by one, which in that case they're less cool.) Thanks for commenting, Lauren!

  4. Why are your characters so interesting? *sigh*
